Much of the history of earth was lost during the many rounds of nuclear, chemical, and biological warfare. When the last cycle of war ended, the Republic of Madagascar emerged as earth’s first one-world government. This, in turn, lead to a sustained era of peace and the pinnacle of mankind’s prosperity.
The prosperity concluded with the second failed singularity, which resulted in the loss of earth to Friend Robots. A contingent of the Earth government escaped to space, and still considers themselves the government of earth in exile. The citizens of Earth’s Government in Exile exist at a high level of comfort in space. Ex-Earth media regularly infatuates itself with random causes, such as the inspection of an Independent ship or the enforcement of a minor regulation on United Fructose. Because of this, they are often accused of being in denial about the reality of their position. The Ex-Earthlings, for their part, admit to having an issue with depression.

The fleets of the Carbon tribes are descended from an experiment in living spaceships conducted before the second failed singularity. The spaceships are often described as 'space whales' and are essentially an artificial lifeform that thrives in the depths of space.
Great care was taken to prevent the first intelligent robots from becoming dangerous to humans. An over-correction in their programming lead to the rise of the Friend Robots, also known as the second failed singularity. The Friend Robot civilization exists for the sole purpose of making humans happy. The Friend Robots eventually found that the best way to achieve this was through forced chemical injection. A human captured by a Friend Robot will know nothing but bliss as they live out their extended lifespan in a drug-induced haze of their Friend Robot nursery container.
In the early days of space travel, many groups took to the stars in generation-ships, hoping to lay claim on distant planets. These earliest pioneers were invariably overtaken by faster, more advanced ships on the way to their destinations. With no planets to claim, most independents became space-faring micronations. The independents vary, but freedom and privacy are commonly held in the highest regard. Because of this, they are often suspected of harboring human-rights abuses that would not be tolerated by Earth’s Government-In-Exile or the Holy United Fructose Corporation.
